PROVIDING MARINE REGULATORY SOLUTIONS FOR OVER 25 YEARS

Ben Wheeler is the President of NEMO Environmental Ltd.

Ben has had the fortune to be involved in many of Canada's largest marine terminal, offshore and shipping related projects, primarily in British Columbia but also in the western and eastern Arctic and east coast of Canada. These projects span the container terminal, government, oil & gas, mining and renewables sectors.

The role that Ben typically plays on these projects is 'advisory lead' on marine-related portions which involves working with clients to develop regulatory strategy, engage regulators, design field programs, undertake environmental assessments, peer-review/edit documents, collaborating with technical specialists and engineers to avoid, reduce and offset impacts from industrial development. Lately Ben has also been providing communications and review panel support/attendance.

From living in Nunavut for 4 years Ben developed a strong interest in integrating Traditional Knowledge and science when making decisions that relate to resource co-management. Ben has also developed a strong passion for communicating technical material to the general public - a key element for environmnetal approvals!

Ben's technical area of expertise is marine mammals, he sat on the Eastern Arctic Bowhead Whale Recovery Team (under the Species at Risk Act) and was a founding contributor to, and member of, the Advisory Working Group on the Port of Vancouver's (award winning) ECHO program (focused on the endangered Southern Resident Killer Whale).

From Ben's experiences across Canada he has developed a strong network of technical experts and contractors specializing in all aspects of the marine environment (oceanographers, acoustic experts, fisheries experts, modelers, statisticians, etc).

Ben has been a leader at several small and large environmental consulting firms and has a passion for coaching and mentoring staff: he's actively supplementing these experineces with formal coaching training and loves working with people to help them solve their challenges.

Ben's desire to be part of an employee-owned company started with the creation of NEMO in 1999 and since then he was with Jacques Whiford, Jacques Whitford-AXYS, Stantec, Hemmera, Hemmera/Ausenco, Golder and Golder-WSP.
